Governance update — Engaging with the Community

Aug 18, 2020, 10:55 AM

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for local governments and their communities but it has also highlighted the innovative ways local governments are working to produce the best outcomes for their communities.

Although traditional forms of community engagement, such as Electors’ Special Meetings, are not able to be held while the State of Emergency declaration is in force, it is critical that local governments continue to engage with their community on important issues and projects.

Local governments are encouraged to still consult with their community through community workshops, meetings (in-person and/or electronic) or other appropriate engagement strategies, if they are compliant with the physical distancing restrictions currently in place. Where possible, council meetings should be livestreamed or recorded and made available to ensure the community remains engaged during this time.
