Literacy boost for Western Australia

Feb 17, 2022, 09:34 AM

Public libraries and community organisations throughout Western Australia are invited to apply for grants to deliver new early literacy programs from a total funding pool worth $200,000.

The new Better Beginnings Family Literacy Community Grants were a 2021 State Government election commitment which aims to support parents in their role as their child's first teacher. The program encourages parents to read, talk, sing, write and play with their child every day from birth.

Developing children's early literacy skills in their pre-school years provides a solid foundation for lifelong literacy, which has a significant impact on a range of life outcomes including employment, health, community participation and personal wellbeing.

Better Beginnings Family Literacy Community Grants offer grants between $5000 and $30,000 for public libraries and community organisations state-wide to deliver new early literacy programs tailored to their communities' needs.

Public libraries and community organisations can apply online through the Better Beginnings website.

Applications close 12 March 2022.
