More than 150 key decision-makers from government, the not-for-profit sector and businesses came together in Mandurah at the 2025 WA Trails Forum to discuss and plan the future of trails and recreation and launch a key trail planning document.

The forum was delivered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the City of Mandurah.

Trail blazers and industry leaders were treated to a full day packed with the latest developments in the industry across a range of topics including nature-based tourism, inclusive trail participation, sustainable trail development and storytelling through Aboriginal engagement.

The main event on the agenda was the launch of the WA Horse Trail Management Guidelines , the final document in a series of trail planning guidelines and the first of its kind in Australia.

The guideline provides a framework for sustainable equestrian trail care incorporating global best practices with local experience.

The guideline is informed by current trail design standards for various environments and riding styles as well as address the diverse needs of users, including people with disabilities, different skill levels, and aesthetic preferences.

Other highlights from the day included a keynote presentation from DBCA on sustainable tourism practices and a discussion about the economic benefits Thomas Dambo’s Giants of Mandurah exhibition brought to the region.

Speaking at the event, emcee and DLGSC Deputy Director General Erin Gauntlett said the annual Trails Forum is one of the biggest events on the outdoor recreation calendar.

“The WA Trails Forum is an opportunity to bring together like-minded individuals with diverse perspectives working towards a common goal - ensuring that Western Australia is one of the best places to live through developing trails that are sustainable, inclusive, and enriching for all users.”

The forum is part of DLGSC’s ongoing work set out in the Western Australian Strategic Trails Blueprint 2022 – 2027, an overarching guide for consistent and coordinated planning, development and management of quality trails and trail experiences across Western Australia.
