Expression of Interest - Principal Adjudicator and Deputy Adjudicator Roles
Expressions of Interest (EOI) are being sought for the roles of Principal Adjudicator and Deputy Adjudicator roles.
The Local Government Amendment Act 2024 was assented to on 6 December 2024 and introduced powers for a new Local Government Inspector to oversee compliance and conduct within the local government sector. A new Adjudicator function to consider conduct breach complaints is also part of these reforms.
The Minister for Local Government can appoint one Principal Adjudicator and several Deputy Adjudicators for a period of up to four years. Each can be reappointed for subsequent terms.
Expressions of Interest (EOI) are being sought for the roles of Principal Adjudicator and Deputy Adjudicator roles.
EOIs will close at 4pm on 10 November 2025.
Role Overview
The Local Government Act 1995 (Act) provides that regulations must prescribe a model code of conduct for council members, committee members and candidates. These are the Local Government (Model Code of Conduct) Regulations 2021
(Model Code).
Currently, complaints under Part 4 of the Model Codel are considered by the Standards Panel.
Recent legislative reforms have introduced the Local Government Inspector (Inspector) to oversee compliance and conduct for the local government sector, and the Adjudicator function to review conduct breach complaints.
All complaints will be received by the Inspector, who can then refer conduct breach complaints to the Principal Adjudicator.
The Principal Adjudicator will either deal with the conduct breach themselves or allocate it to one of the Deputy Adjudicators.
Adjudicators are not employees of LGIRS and are appointed by the Minister. For more information about the Adjudicator and Deputy Adjudicator roles, please refer to the attached Role Descriptions.
Prerequisites
- To be eligible for appointment, adjudicators must be legal practitioners with at least 5 years’ experience who are not council members, local government employees or employees of WALGA.
- A pre-existing knowledge of the Local Government Act 1995 is beneficial but not mandatory.
Remuneration
The position is currently subject to a remuneration determination by the Public Sector Commissioner.
