Building a positive training environment

Shawn Redhage

Coach, four times NBL Champion and played 380 NBL games for the Perth Wildcats.

Shawn will share his knowledge on keeping kids engaged in training through small sided games. Learn how this training method will benefit your players by transferring the skills learned to the game.  Shawn will also speak about building a positive culture within the team.

There will be time for questions and answers at the end of Shawn’s presentation.

Since coming to Australia from the USA in 2004, Shawn Redhage has had a legendary professional basketball career.  He has played in 380 NBL games for the Perth Wildcats while earning the nickname The Scoring Machine for his offensive repertoire on the court.  Shawn’s work ethic and professionalism on and off the court has helped him to accomplish some amazing feats in his career which also include:

  • 6 x Perth Wildcats MVP Award
  • 2008 Australian Boomers Beijing Olympian
  • 7 x All NBL Team selection.

Shawn started Redhage Basketball in 2017 which has now grown to be the largest private basketball program in WA coaching over 6,000 kids in the first 3 years.  They have a wide range of programs from 6-year-old beginners to high level elite players.  Shawn is passionate about getting kids playing sport and using the game of basketball to promote healthy and active living.

Jamie Douse

Coach the athlete — Coach the person

Jamie DouseSouth West Talent and Coaching Manager, WAFC, and AFL Program Manager and Coach for the South West Academy of Sport (SWAS).

Jamie will provide coaches with an understanding of the physical side of youth maturation and what considerations need to be given for fitness preparation and other factors.  Learn what is appropriate and inappropriate at the different stages of physical maturity.  Each child matures differently, and this should influence how you coach.  Jamie will also focus on how coaches can create a safe and secure emotional environment for their athletes by recognising each individual is different and identifying the different behaviours from their athletes.

There will be time for questions and answers at the end of Jamie’s presentation.

Jamie lives in Bunbury and has been coaching for over 20 years. His strength and conditioning coaching experience is across multiple sporting codes including mixed martial arts, rowing, netball, basketball and AFL.  Jamie works as the South West Talent and Coaching Manager for the WAFC and has been coaching athletes on the AFL talent pathway for over 10 years.  He is also the AFL Program Manager and Coach for the South West Academy of Sport (SWAS). The SWAS program managed by Jamie is recognised as one of the premier regional football talent programs in WA.
