Families will be able to apply for up to $500 in KidSport vouchers per eligible child to ensure the child can participate in their favourite sport over the next year.
KidSport enables eligible children to participate in community sport by offering financial assistance towards club fees, and essential playing equipment and uniforms. In 2023-24, 25,500 children benefited from the program, which is administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Industries (DLGSC).
The announcement to increase the voucher amount to $500 per eligible child for this financial year was announced by the Premier for Western Australia and Minister for Sport and Recreation on Sunday 7 July 2024 at Forrestfield Football Club. 51 junior players there have received a total of $9000 in KidSport vouchers.
Treasurer at Forrestfield FC Sarah Attfield, pictured with Vice President — Juniors, Dean Willis, says currently about 10% of families whose kids play footy at the club are KidSport voucher recipients. Sarah, a mum-of-four, has also received the vouchers in the past for her two sons.
“The vouchers meant my sons were able to play a sport they otherwise wouldn’t be able to play.
“KidSport vouchers are a great thing, they are an essential part of our community allowing families access to sports and activities they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.
“As the Treasurer at Forrestfield Football Club, I see families using the vouchers to pay their registration fees and also to buy uniform items such as their shorts and socks which they use on game day.”
The new $3 million boost in financial support for KidSport is the second recent increase for the program. In August 2023 the State Government announced that the amount families can apply for through the KidSport program was lifted from $150 to $300, and the list of what vouchers can be used for was expanded to include essential playing equipment and uniforms.
KidSport is open to eligible 5 to18 year olds.
