Outdoor community swimming pool lanes with a shade sail covering.

An eight lane 25-metre pool will replace the existing six-lane 25-metre pool and there will be a new leisure program pool. Overall, the project will double the existing water space.

The funding builds on the $6 million already put towards the project through a 2021 State Election commitment, while the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley has contributed just over $3 million and the Department of Communities has put in $170,000 via a Changing Places grant.

As well as the new eight lane 25-metre pool, the redevelopment includes a dedicated tots pool, upgraded changerooms to meet disability access requirements and a covered barbeque area.

Works are expected to commence in 2024.

These new facilities will complement the $3.2 million water playground that opened in 2022 and was fully funded through the WA Recovery Plan.

Minister for Sport and Recreation David Templeman says in a place like Kununurra, having a good pool that’s big enough for the local population is very important.

“The expansion of the pool to 8 lanes and the addition of a leisure pool will be welcomed by the community, who really value the much-used facility as a community asset.

“In one of the hottest parts of the state, having a covered area for barbecuing is also a must.

“Of course, swimming is synonymous with living in Western Australia, so ensuring people have access to aquatics facilities — for activities from lessons to training — is a priority.”
