High performance

The department is committed to creating a sports system that allows our athletes to achieve their ultimate potential in both national and international sport.

The department works closely with State Sporting Associations (SSAs), the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) and other peak bodies to ensure that Western Australia has a strong and viable high performance system. Critical to this are the need for clearly defined athlete and coach pathways that encompass sport development, talent identification and systems for elite athlete performance.

Athlete development

Talent identification, training, access to sports sciences, competition, careers and education.

Regional Athlete Support Program

Developing young regionally-based talented athletes to train and compete in regional WA.

High Performance Leaders Network

The network provides a forum for High Performance Leaders to meet and discuss various trends and issues.

Developing Champions

Equips athletes with an understanding of the elite athlete lifestyle, the importance of a balanced life and the positive effects on sports performance.

Coach and Official Leadership Program

Developing effective leadership and capacity in individuals.

High Performance Unit

In 2006 the department established a High Performance Unit to support and complement the operations of WAIS and to build talent development capacity in SSAs.

The unit has two staff:

  • Project Officer Pathway Development
  • Talent Development Coordinator

The department currently provides a flexible system of consultancy and support to targeted SSAs for a variety of high performance initiatives including the following:

  • High performance capacity assessments and system reviews
  • High Performance Leaders Network
  • Regional Talent Development
  • Developing Champions – program to assist the development of aspiring young athletes to gain personal development and life skills
  • Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme.

These support mechanisms are designed to assist SSAs and peak industry bodies to work in partnership with the State Government to develop their sport activities. The priorities and needs of organisations – including WAIS, as well as government policy and priorities determine funding allocations and department support.
