As part of this year’s exciting and powerful program for National Reconciliation Week (NRW), the Street Banners Project provides an opportunity for an emerging Aboriginal artist to have their artwork featured on banners and digital signs right across the state.

The banners are sponsored by local businesses and agencies wanting to actively show their support for reconciliation.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June each year, with the dates commemorating the successful 1967 referendum (27 May) and the Mabo decision (3 June).

This year the banners feature the striking artwork Mina Mina from emerging Aboriginal artist Renita Brown Nungurrayi.

This work documents a significant women’s Dreaming site, the story of which was passed down to her through her Warlpiri matriarchal line. 

Ms Brown Nungurrayi lives between Papunya in the Northern Territory with her father’s Luritja family and her mother’s Warlpiri family on Balgo where she paints with the Warlayirti Artists. 

The fluid nature of communities across the state border is a reminder of the ancient and persistent connection to culture and country.

The artwork also features on a selection of merchandise including prints, bags and tea towels available for purchase through Reconciliation WA’s website. 

Proceeds from the sale of the banners and merchandise go directly to the artist and NRW programming.

The 2024 NRW flagship events include the NRW Breakfast and the Walk for Reconciliation.

The breakfast event on 27 May opens festivities and welcomes 1000 people to Optus Stadium in Boorloo (Perth) as well as being broadcast live to millions of West Australians joining the live stream across the state.

It will feature engaging keynote speakers Dr Betsy Buchanan and Justice Robert French, along with Aboriginal leaders, powerful regional voices and a unique and moving performance from WA Opera.

Albany, Karratha and Newman will also host special regional breakfast events for the first time.

Special yarning circles will once again be held at Kaarta Koomba Kings Park, creating a safe space to yarn about reconciliation and the 2024 NRW Theme.

To bring the week to a close, the powerful Walk for Reconciliation events will see thousands of Western Australians walk together in solidarityin Boorloo/Perth, Goomburrup/Bunbury and Marapikurrinya/Port Hedland.

Registrations for free events and ticket sales are now open with most events providing affordable options and digital accessibility.
