The Bass Line: Charting the Economic Contribution of Australia’s Music Industry report brings together hundreds of thousands of data points, including from industry, government and individuals and businesses working across the music industry.

The research shows that the Australian music industry generated revenues of $8.78 billion and contributed $2.82 billion in direct gross value added, or GVA, to the Australian economy in 2023-24.

It also shows strong international demand for Australian music, with music exports, including income from overseas streaming, performances, rights and retail contributing an estimated $975 million to the total Australian music industry revenue.

Some of the latest insights on opportunities and challenges facing the Australian music industry are also shown in the Music Australia Listening In research series which explores new trends in the ways Australians engage with music.

Research such as this informs government policy that aims to support the Australian music industry.  The WA Government’s latest investment in Western Australia’s contemporary music sector through the Contemporary Music Development Fund invites WA musicians and music industry professionals to apply for up to $20,000 to take up career defining opportunities.
