Western Australia is now the most competitive destination in Australia for post-production, digital and visual effects (PDV) projects.
Perth Film Studios is more than 60% complete and the WA Government has announced an expanded Capacity Building Program, ahead of the opening of the Perth Film Studios in 2026. The Targeted Industry Capacity Building Program, delivered by Screenwest, will enable businesses to scale up to provide infrastructure and services that will build capacity in targeted areas of the screen industry.
Already we are seeing some great productions being made in WA, including the Australian version of the hit UK series Ghosts, The Twelve: Cape Rock Killer, Mystery Road Origin: Season 2, Shipwreck Hunters Season 2, The Travellers written and directed by Bruce Beresford, Reckless, Tales from Outer Suburbia, the latest screen adaptation from Shaun Tan and a new series inspired by the life of the notorious ‘post card bandit’.
This year’s Revelation Perth Film Festival screened 45 feature films over 12 days, including 4 that were made in WA, and more than 100 short films.
CinefestOz 2025 Festival program has been launched with the festival starting on 30 August and running until 7 September.
The festival is a celebration of Australian filmmaking that includes special and early screenings and events in cinemas, wineries, small bars and galleries across Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River and the 2025 event is supported by the WA Government through the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program (RACIP). This year 2 of the 4 films in the running to win the CinefestOz Film Prize of $100,000 – the largest film prize dedicated to Australian feature films – are made in WA.
The Screen Industry Strategy’s focus on screen production, workforce and industry capacity in WA will continue to support increased production in the state, building capacity of the local workforce and diversifying the WA economy.
