Staff at Woodman Point Recreation Camp

Last month, the usually tranquil grounds of Woodman Point were buzzing with energy as more than 320 clients from across Western Australia came together for a 3-day outdoor adventure. From Denmark and Yallingup in the south to Swan Valley and Queens Park closer to home, the camp welcomed a diverse mix of schools and community groups for a jam-packed program of fun, learning and connection. Hosted by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, the event was a celebration of teamwork, growth and good old-fashioned camp spirit.

Across the 3-day stretch, 77 structured programs were delivered, alongside 10 self-directed activities led by clients themselves. With 23 outdoor leaders, 2 workplace students, and a flurry of inductions and roping assessments, the site was a hive of enthusiasm, elbow grease and endless encouragement.

Campers tackled high ropes courses that had hearts racing and confidence soaring, zipped through flying foxes with wind in their hair, and tested their aim in archery sessions that hit the mark in more ways than one. Beach games brought laughter to the shoreline, while raft-building challenges turned strangers into teammates. Whether it was scaling walls, paddling kayaks or navigating bush trails, every activity was a chance to grow, connect and have a blast.

Woodman Point Recreation Camp Manager Ben Walton said it was a wonderful week of spring sunshine and programs where the outdoor leaders did an incredible job.

“By Friday afternoon the team were running on adrenaline and all still smiling when we gathered for a photo. That says it all.”

Woodman Point is just one of 5 camp locations supported by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, with 4 sites across the Perth metro area and one nestled in Albany’s scenic surrounds. These camps are more than just dorm rooms and timetables, they’re places where confidence is built, friendships are forged, and memories are made.

These camps continue to offer incredible opportunities for schools and communities to connect through outdoor recreation. Whether it’s conquering a climbing wall, sharing stories around a campfire or simply soaking up the sea breeze, the experience is always more than the sum of its parts.

And as the sun set on another successful week at Woodman Point, one thing was clear: the spirit of camp is alive and well and it’s smiling in every photo.
