Intro

The 18-year-old butterfly specialist’s journey from Peel to the national podium is a story of talent and support systems that nurtured his abilities outside of the metropolitan spotlight.

Sean’s journey in the pool was accompanied by hours in the car.

“Living in Mandurah meant long drives to Perth for training and juggling everything, but I just kept pushing because I knew what I wanted,” he said.

Despite the challenges of living outside Perth, he’s found a way to make it work, paying tribute to coach and Peel Regional Academy of Sports (PRAS) Executive Officer Chris Wing.

PRAS, like other regional Academies, is funded through the WA Government's Regional Athlete Support Program (RASP).

“Chris Wing introduced me to strength and conditioning and I saw results almost immediately,” he said.

“I dropped 20 seconds off my 400m freestyle in 5 months, he’s been more than a coach he’s helped shape me as a person."

Alongside Sean’s talent and hard work have been other support networks through RASP.

"The RASP Athlete Travel Support Scheme  gave me around $1,000 a year to help with travel costs, which made a huge difference, especially when you’re flying east for nationals, it helped me stay in the game."

From family sacrifices to local mentors, the backing he received has opened the door for him to chase national medals and hopefully a place in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

His story is a reminder that elite talent isn’t about the postcode, with RASP supporting talent in our regions to turn their potential into podiums positions.
