Break the Boundary Inc. is taking adaptive mountain biking to new heights in Western Australia, delivering a unique program for riders living with disability.

Funded through the WA Government’s Outdoor Active Recreation Participation Program, the initiative trained 11 adaptive mountain bike leaders across Perth, Peel and regional WA.

Adaptive Mountain Biking Leader, Ebonny McGann said the grant enabled leaders to gain qualifications in wilderness first aid, disability awareness, bike mechanics and coaching.

“The wilderness first aid course was challenging but invaluable,” she said.

“It gave us the confidence to lead safely and effectively.

The program welcomed 9 new people through supported clinics, which included custom bike setups, safety screenings and follow-up care. The program helped boost skills such as navigating larger turning circles, managing body position and balance. Participants were able to use wider bikes with at least three wheels and were adjusted to suit each need.

Every participant said they planned to return and were looking forward to honing skills on the adaptive bikes.

The program’s tailored approach ensures participants are supported from the start and can work their way up to riding confidently in community social rides or even participating in events if they wish. It is wonderful to see everyone return from their rides with a huge smile on their face.

So far, more than 20 people have taken part in the program. Break the Boundary is now planning to expand its reach, with more induction clinics, training sessions and regional visits on the horizon.
