The Gascoyne has a diverse range of recreational activities.
The region offers a diverse range of both active and passive recreational activities. The superb climate, hot summer and warm winter combined with the natural attractions of the region are enticing for outdoor recreation. Popular activities include surfing, kite boarding, fishing, camping, day outings and boating.
The facility is set to receive the grant through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
Built in 1971, the facility includes a six-lane, 50-metre swimming pool with an additional children's pool and basic change rooms, kiosk and toilets, and is home to the Mount Barker Amateur Swimming Club.
In February, the facility will also host the 2021 SunSmart Country Pennants, sponsored by Healthway, bringing swimmers all the way from Broome to Albany together to compete against other regional clubs from across the State.
The first stage of the project includes the construction of a new amenities building incorporating the change rooms, toilets, first aid room, a kiosk, administration office and clubrooms.
Subsequent stages of the refurbishment will include an upgraded 50-metre pool, and the construction of a new learn to swim pool, plant room and filtration system.
Additional upgrades to the solar heating and landscaping and development of recreational areas will also occur.
The redevelopment was made possible by the State Government's $374,183 Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund grant.
The remaining funding was provided by the Shire of Plantagenet and the Federal Government.
The department works closely with a range of stakeholders in the Gascoyne region. These include local governments, the Gascoyne Development Commission, State Government agencies and not-for-profit organisations.
