Intro

The WA Government is commencing an independent review to ensure the Western Australian racing industry has a framework for long-term financial sustainability.

The racing industry’s economic contribution to the State exceeds $1.3 billion each year and employs thousands of local workers.

The Financial Sustainability and Governance Review will explore ways thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing can be sustained long-term across WA.

The review will examine structures established under the Racing and Wagering Western Australia Act 2003 which support and develop the racing industry in WA. Jockey and animal welfare won’t form part of the review.

It will be led by the former Mandurah MLA Hon David Templeman along with Professor Warren Harding AM.

Mr Templeman’s experience spans 24 years as a member of Parliament from 2001-2025 and has held a number of senior portfolios. He also has experience chairing committees, boards and community organisations as well as a strong understanding of local and State issues.

Prof. Harding has extensive experience in delivering complex projects in government and corporate roles, including over 30 years’ experience at managing partner level with international consulting firms.

The Financial Sustainability and Governance Review will be managed by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) and the Department of Treasury and Finance.
