Integrity, accountability and transparency

  • Council members hold a public office with payment for attending meetings and exercise powers, functions and duties on behalf of the local community. This means council members are expected to act in the public interest rather than their self-interest.
  • Council members must demonstrate and promote openness, honesty and acceptance of responsibility for decision-making and performance.
  • Council members must make professional, informed and ethical decisions. Sometimes the circumstances can be difficult, as there may be complex situations and multiple stakeholders from various interest groups to be considered.
  • If you decide to nominate as a candidate, you must meet the standards of behaviour set out in relevant legislation, such as the Model Code of Conduct Regulations.
  • If you are elected, you must continue to meet the standards in the Model Code of Conduct Regulations (see next page for more information).
