Communication and interpersonal skills

  • Communication skills are fundamental to working effectively on council and shaping the future direction of the local community. The ability to communicate clearly and listen well to others is vital for council members.
  • It is important to understand that council members do not make decisions on their own and, if elected, you will need to be able to work well with other council members.
  • This doesn’t mean you have to agree on everything, but you will need to be prepared to engage in respectful debate and build effective working relationships.
