While there are no special qualifications or experience required to be on council, you should be passionate about your local community, commit to work as part of a team and engage in ongoing learning and development.

The following information outlines some of the other qualities that may help you to be an effective council member.

Organisation and time management

Being a council member involves a significant time commitment.

If you are elected to council, you will need to be well-organised and manage your time effectively. Your council responsibilities may impact on your availability to do other things.

Along with council and committee meetings, you may be expected to attend:

  • workshops
  • briefing forums
  • citizenship ceremonies
  • community events.
