Local government services

The role of local government is varied, and services can often depend on the needs of the local community.

Local governments provide essential community services specified in legislation such as:

  • town planning and building controls
  • residential waste collection
  • bush fire control and mitigation
  • cat and dog management
  • food and public health inspections
  • swimming pool inspections.

They can also provide other services at their own discretion such as:

  • tourism and economic development
  • sport and recreation facilities
  • local roads and footpaths
  • community safety
  • local environmental management and protection
  • community services such as home and community care, cultural activities, libraries, and seniors and childcare services.
